From August 6th to 12th we were again at the Hockenheim Ring in Baden-Würtemberg. The first time this year with both vehicles at the same time!
After experiencing our most successful event to date at Formula Student Austria, we competed at FS Germany in Hockenheim with very high expectations and hopes. On the one hand we wanted to defend our podium position among driverless vehicles from 2017 with the egn18-dv and on the other hand we wanted to collect as many points with the egn18-ev as in Austria. We experienced an event with many ups and downs, which encouraged us to keep going. Finally, thanks to hard and energetic work, we managed to climb back to third place in the FS Driverless! Unfortunately, the egn18-ev was stopped 200 m before reaching the 22 kilometre mark by the defect of a chip on the battery board, a small drawback at a great event.
On the first day we could set up our two boxes and prepare the vehicles for the first scrutineerings and explore the camp and event area.
After all preparations on both vehicles and the batteries had been made, the battery scrutineering started. We were able to bring both of us back into the boxes in a very short time and without problems with a Scruti sticker. For the vehicles, on the other hand, mechanical scrutineering was a success!
On the third day we focused on the statics for egn18-ev and egn18-dv. In both engineering design and cost reports we were able to achieve very good results, which we were even able to reward with a third place in the cost report at egn18-ev and only one missing point to the top two. Finally, the PA also came through the electrical scrutineering, which allowed us to schedule the first test drives for the following day.
Finally both vehicles, the EV and the DV, took the last scrutineering hurdles with the brake, tilt and rain tests! From now on nothing stood in the way of test drives, because on the fifth day acceleration and skid pad took place.
Today the first Dynamics disciplines for both vehicles were scheduled. Once again we were able to achieve good times with the EV and DV in the acceleration as well as in the skid pad. Our DV managed to claim third place in the Skid Pad as well as fifth place in the Acceleration.
The first big day for EV and DV. While the Autocross event was on schedule for the egn18-ev, the egn18-dv had to prove itself in the track drive. After initial problems and their elimination, we managed to finish second with a good time here. The egn18-ev could show an equally good performance with an 8th place, which kept us hoping for a top 10 position at the end of the event.
After we found and successfully solved a few minor problems in the run-up to the Endurance event at noon, we went into the last race in the early afternoon. The egn18-ev should drive 22 kilometres without any problems, just like in Austria. With good lap times, we were also able to show the potential of the vehicle. However, until one of the chips on the battery board 200 meters before the end of the race caused an AMS error, which forced us to stop the race. But the day should not be determined by this severe setback. Rather, the cheering was great when we were able to celebrate third place overall among the driverless vehicles at the last Award Ceremony this evening!
